Komagata Maru | 2013

A series of photographs conceived in collaboration with Aditi Rajeev, addressing the Komagata Maru Incident.

In 1914, ship carrying 376 would-be immigrants of Canada (subjects of British India), primarily Sikhs, sailed from Hong Kong to Vancouver and was not allowed to dock as exclusionary racial laws prohibiting (or restricting) the entry of Asians were in place. The ship was sent back after 60 days of conflict.
